Mt.
Arenal Volcano and nearby attractions
Mr. Arenal is
approximately a four hour drive to/from La Paila. We recommend you extend your
stay with an overnight at the Mt. Arenal Lodge (Phone #011-506-228-3189, Fax
#011-506-289-6798). This overlooks an active volcano and on a clear night the
view is spectacular.
Lunch:
Arenal Kioro Mirador –
Have plans to build cottages. Excellent view of the volcano. 506-461-1700; Fax

Lodging
near Mt. Arenal:
Nearby
Hotsprings:
Ecotermales Fortuna,
506-479-8484. Wonderful restaurant which requires reservations. Newly opened.
The hot springs are limited to 100 reservations a day, so is very private and is
very beautiful. Mr. Orlando Vega Hidalgo. The property was owned for 75 years by
his grandmother, and his mom does all the cooking.
Canopy
tours:
There is a canopy tour
close to the house somewhere between Playa Carillo and Samara. Look for the
signs on your way to buy groceries in Samara on your left.
The Ricon de la Vieja
National Park is about 2 hours driving time away from the house, past Nicoya,
and well worth the trip. Two lodges there are recommended:
Hotel
Hacienda Guachipelin
Email:
info@guachipelin.com;
phone: 506-442-2818; fax:506-442-1910
They have the canyon canopy tour, horseback riding, waterfalls, volcanic mud
pools and more.
Ricon de la Vieja Lodge
phone/fax: 506-661-8198.
This looks charming. They have hiking, biking, waterfalls, volcanic activity,
horseback riding, but most of all they have a canopy tour of 21 platforms in the
trees.

Surfing and
Wind Surfing:
There is good surfing
near the house. A popular spot seems to be about an hour north near Nosara, but
we’ve seen seen surfers all over that coast. We would recommend trying to
contact surf shops in Samara or Nosara for details. Lake Arenal, near the
volcano – a highly recommended side trip three hours or so drive from the house
- has some of the best windsurfing in the world. A good link for surfing info:
www.centralamerica.com/cr/surf/surfmap.htm.
Plus, seacrch on Google, 'costa rica, surfing' for many links and info.
Boat/Fishing Trips:
Spend a day or just a
half day sport fishing with Robert Gordon. A recent La Paila guest caught a 700+
lb. marlin! Launch just minutes away from the villa at Puerto Carrillo across
from the Guanamar Hotel. Learn more at
www.sportfishcarrillo.com or
email Rob at
sportfishcarrillo@hotmail.com.
Look up Giorgio
Carletto and Antonella Bolsieri at the Hotel Giada in Samara, also where the
Sansa desk is. They can help arrange boat trips.
